Before we begin...

For safety purposes, please make sure to make a full backup of your data preferably using Time Machine. Please, take a look at the following video for more information about backing up your data.

Note: Of course, while you may have an older Mac, it doesn't necessarily mean that you are not able to use BootCamp to install Windows 10 on your Mac. If you own a newer Mac, you may find it easier to install Windows 10 by using BootCamp assistant. If BootCamp Assistant says that you Mac is not compatible, then this article will be your guide for today!

Once this is done. We are ready to move on to the guide.

What do you need?

  • Windows 10 ISO - download yours here.
  • USB stick - at least 8GB of free space.
  • 2007 or newer Mac computer.

Steps

  1. Locate BootCamp Assistant from the Applications folder. Launch Finder, and then navigate to Applications > Utilities and you should see BootCamp Assistant there. Right click on it and select Show Package Content.

  2. A folder named as Contents will be displayed. For some users, you might not have the permission to manipulate any of its files, so we need to disable these permissions. To do that, right click on it and select Get info.

  3. Scroll all the way down until you see the Sharing & Permissions section. There, you need to make sure that System and everyone are set to Read & Write allowing you to also make changes on these files.

  4. In case you were unable to change the permissions, it means that System Integrity is enabled for your Mac and you will need to manually enable it. Please see more information here on how to disable it. Once you have disabled it, repeat step 3 to disable permissions.
  5. Now open the Contents folder and you should see the info.plist file. Right click on it and select Get info.

  6. Make sure you are able to read & right into it by following the same procedure as step 3.
  7. As we will be making some changes to that file, it's very important to make a backup of it for security purposes. To do this, we will just duplicate it. To duplicate it, right click on info.plist and select Duplicate. Then move the duplicated info.plist into a safe area such as your Desktop.

  8. Then, we are ready to edit it. Right click on it again and choose TextEdit.

  9. The info.plis file contains important information about Boot Camp, including which devises are supported and which are not. We want to remove your device from the unsupported list. From the file, scroll all the way down until you see the following line:
    SupporedNonWin10Models
Here are all the devises listed as their model identifier.

  10. Now you need to find out the model identifier of your device. To do that, click on the Apple logo on the top right of your screen and choose About this Mac.

    Record your Mac computer name.
  11. Open your favourite browser and in my case, I need to type on the search bar, mac mini model identifier, since I own a Mac mini. If you own a MacBook Pro for example, type "macbook pro model identifier". Click on the link which contains "Apple Support". In most cases it could be the first link. The link should look like this:

  12. On the Apple support website, scroll until you locate your Mac computer name. In my case, it's the "Mac mini (Mid 2011), so I have to scroll down to the 2011 section and record both Macmini5,1 and Macmini5,2 identifiers, as there are two possible Model identifiers from my machine.

  13. Then go back to the info.plist file and locate these model Identifiers. They will be placed between the tags. In my case, I have to get rid of the highlighted lines:

Then save the file and exit it.
  14. After this, we are ready to begin with installing Windows 10. Now go back to the Applications folder, then Utility and launch Boot Camp Assistant.
  15. Once you launch it, press on continue and Boot Camp should look like this:

If it doesn't and you are missing the Create a Windows 7 or later version install disk, then take a look here to see how to get it back.
  16. After that, make sure the Create a Windows 7 or later version install disk and Download the latest Windows support software from Apple are checked. In case the support software doesn't download, you may download your copy manually here.

    Then click on Continue.
  17. After that, you will need to select your Windows 10 ISO file to Boot Camp in order to create a Windows 10 installer disk into your USB stick. Now it's a good time to plug in your USB stick. We will use the stick to install Windows 10 on your machine later on.

Keep in mind that all of your date from your USB stick will be removed after completing this process. So please make sure you back up your data before proceeding.
  18. This is the perfect time to decide on how much space you would like to allocate on your Windows 10 partition. As you won't be able to resize it in the future - unless you re-install Windows 10, I highly recommend you to pick a size which you will be happy about in the long run. Please, at this stage record the amount of GB (Giga Bytes) you allocated to Windows 10. Then click on Continue.
  19. Once the process is done, restart your Mac while holding down the option key (located between command and option keys). You should see 3 devices connected to your Mac. Use your left and right arrow keys to navigate left and right respectively and move the selector to the EFI Boot. Then hit enter to proceed.

  20. Now you will need to follow the setup process to complete your Windows 10 installation process. After you have selected the languages, inserted your product key, if you have one and agreed on the terms, then you should be on the Where do you want to install Windows? step. This is the most crucial and important step. Here you need to select the Drive which you have created from the allocation on step 18. Normally, the drive should say "Win 10". If not, identify it based on the Total Size column.

Once you select it, click on next.
  21. If you get an error like "Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table.", then take a look here for a solution.
  22. Once the installation is finished, then your Mac will automatically reboot. Keep an eye on it so as soon as it reboots to hold down the option key. Now you should see a new device named as EFI boot.

  23. Now the process is pretty easy. Follow the set up instructions to setup your Windows 10, including passwords, Microsoft accounts, voice over assistants etc.
  24. Once you end up to your Windows 10 Desktop, then you're almost done. You just need to install the drivers which are located in your USB stick. Go to This PC and open your USB stick where it's named as WININSTALL.

  25. In there, navigate to the Boot Camp folder and double click on setup. If your model is unsupported, then this is likely to throw the error "This version of Boot Camp is not intended for this computer model.". If this happen to you, then you will need to install the drivers manually, by going to drivers.
  26. From there, install the essential drivers located in the following folders:
    1. Speakers - Cirrus > CirrusAudioCS4208x64
    2. Trackpad - Apple > AppleMultiTouchTrackPadInstaller64
    3. SD Card reader - Apple > AppleSDCardReader64
    4. Graphics Card: install one of the following depending on what graphics card your Mac is using
      1. Nvidia > NVidiaGraphics64 > setup
      2. Intel > setup
  27. Once you have finished installing the drivers, reboot your computer and go back to Windows 10 and you are ready to use Windows 10!

We are working to provide you with more tutorials while you are using Windows 10. Please, stay tuned for more upcoming tutorials.
