Facebook, Instagram Outrage spreading worldwide tonight

Facebook, Instagram Outrage spreading worldwide tonight

Facebook and Instagram seem to be down since 10:25pm UK time, according to Down detector with more than 33K reports. What do we know and what can you do?

This is certainly not common. We have seen outraged by YouTube and other Google services back in Christmas holidays 2019 and last December, Google search engine was also down for at least 40 minutes.

Now Facebook services seem to go through a period of extreme outrage by millions of users around the globe, from Australia, to the UK.

What causes these services to go down?

A lot can happen, but we can never be sure.

While Google had made a statement back in December 2020 about being aware of the outrage impacting more than 1.5 billion people, that they are aware of the issue, they didn't give an explanation of the problem, raising question marks around the world of a potential cyberattack or herbals a failure in one of their authentication services.

Sounds like it's no different for Facebook. Facebook is known to have a weird behaviour when something is wrong and will throw messages which do not correspond to the problem some times.

Sometimes, especially on the iPhone app, you may notice that nothing is loading, The loading icon will keep spinning endlessly on your News Feed page. You keep scrolling up continuously with hope to refresh the page and still... nothing. Don't panic! You're in the same boat with millions, or potentially, more than a billion people experiencing in the same problem!

What can you do?

Patience. Usually, issues like these won't last more than an hour. Google outrage December 2020 lasted for 40 minutes. Chances are that that within 5-10 minutes, everything will be back up again.

Of course your first instinct would be to log out and log in, only to discover that you're unable to login. Then to re-install the app and realise that the same behaviour is happening.

The key in those situations would be to check whether other apps or services behave the same way. This will give you more confidence that there isn't a problem with your device, but with Facebook specifically. Then you should check other Facebook services whether they work such as Instagram, only to discover Instagram behaves similarly.

Another idea would be to open downdetector.co.uk and see how many reports there are for Facebook or Instagram specifically. In this case, more than 33,000 people across the globe have reported a problem about Facebook at this moment.

Down Detector, also shows reports made by users for other services too, including Google, YouTube, WhatsApp etc.

Conclusion

It's totally understandable to be frustrated and thinking that your Facebook profile was either hacked or suspended by Facebook. These situations are certainly not occurring frequently and panic should be expected by millions, if not billions. Of course, taking the right steps, is the only way to manage stress in those unexpected situations.

What was your first reaction when you realised something is wrong with Facebook? What steps did you take to try and rectify the situation? Feel free to let me know down in the comment section! I would love to hear everyone's idea!
