Moving files between your Mac and Android is Easier than you think. Here's how...

By default, Mac and Android can't go along together, but installing the necessary software these guys can play very well together. If things go well, this game will become very flexible.

In this article today, we will have a look on how to successfully transfer data from your Android device to your Mac computer easily without any hassle.

By the end of this tutorial, you will be able to transfer easily photos, videos, documents, and more from Android to your Mac and of course the opposite. Transfer data from your Mac to your Android phone as well.

This involves the installation of only one software which will handle all of this. Let's see how to get this business done!

On top of that, we are following the steps discussed from our video:

  1. On your Mac, install Android File Transfer from this link.

  2. Open the AndroidFileTransfer.dmg file you just downloaded.

  3. Once the installation is done, a window should pop up. Drag Android File Transfer into the Applications folder.

Now let's move on setting up our Android device to get it ready to send stuff onto our Mac. First thing first, we need to enable USB debugging mode. That's right, this option doesn't exist on your Settings yet, because it's hidden (until now). To un-hide it, you need to enable Developer Options. Let's see how to do this...

  4. On your Android device, launch settings and from the main settings menu, scroll all the way down. From here go to About device.

  5. Then go to Software info.

  6. Tap on Build number 7 times and you should get a message saying You are now a developer.

  7. Go back to the main Settings page and you should have a new option named as Developer Options.

  8. Tap on Developer options and scroll down until you find an option called USB debugging. Tap on the switch to enable it.

  9. After that, you are ready to connect your Android phone to your Mac.

  10. Finally, Android uses the MTP connection (stands for Media transfer protocol) for transferring media files, that being music, photos, videos, pdf files etc. It's the standard protocol from 2011 used for moving files from and to Android devices. Unfortunately, Mac doesn't support MTP connection, and hence Android File Transfer utility is necessary.
To avoid any possible errors, we need to tell for what reason is there a USB connection with your computer to your device. To do that, bring down the notification bar on your device.
  11. You should see the notification Transferring media files via USB. Tap on it.

  12. A list of 4 options should appear. Make sure the top one is selected (the one saying something like Transfer media files to PC via an MTP connection).

  13. After that, if everything goes well, you should be able to transfer files between your Android Device and your Mac. Let's see how this is done. Let's say you want to transfer a photo you took recently from your device to your Mac. First launch Android file Transfer from your Applications folder. A window should open looking like this

  14. Double click on the folder called DCIM or click on the arrow on its left.

  15. Then double click on the Camera sub directory or click on the arrow on its left. Now all of your photos and videos captured from your camera should be listed here. Here I also ordered all my photos by their last modification date.

  16. Then locate the image or the file you would like to transfer. Simply drag and drop it on your desktop.

  17. After that, you may open the image or video file you just moved to your Mac.

  18. Great. Now you know how to transfer stuff from your Android to your Mac. Now let's see how to move files from your Mac to your Android device. It's very easy. You just drag and drop your file to a folder on your Android device or you can create a new folder and drag your file there. In our case, we will transfer a book as a pdf format to the root directory.

  19. Now let's go and locate the book we just transferred. You need to open an app coming with your Android OS called Files or similar. For Samsung devices, it can be found under the Samsung folder on an app called My Files. Launch it.

  20. Scroll until you locate the file.

Congratulations. Now you may freely transfer files between your Mac and Android device without any obstacles, if everything goes well.

Unfortunately, Android File Transfer utility, is prone to errors and can be unreliable from time to time and so error pop ups can be frequent. If you get an error saying Try reconnecting or restarting your device, then you may want to have a loot at this article where I go through step by step on how to rectify this issue.

Finally, your feedback is as important as making this tutorial. So, feel free to let me know any problems you may face while reading this tutorial, if something is incorrect or doesn't work properly, although our methods are thoroughly tested behind the scenes.

Thanks for reading and hope you found this tutorial guide helpful.

Happy new year!
