How to Reset Forgotten Passcode on ANY Android Phone

Forgot your Android Passcode? Not anymore! In this guide, you will find out how to regain access to your Android phone.

Do you have an Android phone which you don't remember the password? Or perhaps you have setup a pattern on an old Android phone which you left in the closet for a while and after years you still can't remember the pattern? No worries anymore. In this article we will cover multiple cases on how to regain access on your Android phone again.

Part of this article, we also have created a video illustrating the entire process.

So, how to reset your forgotten passcode on your Android phone?

Before your move on with this process, make sure that the following options are unavailable:

  • Draw your pattern/Type your pin multiple times until you need to wait for 30 seconds to re-enter your pin or pattern. Does a Forgot Pattern/Pin appear on the bottom of the screen?
  • Do you have USB debugging enabled? For this, you can use Android Studio SDK to reset the passcode. This doesn't apply on every case scenario.
  • Do you have a 3rd party lock screen?

If any of the above scenarios apply in your case, then you can have a look at how to reset your Android phone without removing your data. Otherwise, you can proceed with the steps below.

If you own one of the latest Samsung phones

  1. Hold down the volume down - and the power button key at the same time for 15 seconds.

  2. The phone should power off with the screen being pure black.
  3. Hold down the volume up key + and power button at the same time until you see the logo on the screen.
  4. You should see the Recovery Menu on the screen. To use the recovery menu, use the arrow keys to navigate up and down and the power button to choose an option.

  5. Use the volume down button to move the cursor down until the Wipe Data/Factory Reset (or similar) is highlighted.

  6. Unfortunately, the only way to regain access on your Android phone is to factory reset it. However, double check if you indeed can't remember the password or there is no way to reset it.
  7. Once you are ready to proceed, press on the power button on the Wipe Data/Factory Reset option.
  8. You should receive a warning message. Make sure you move your cursor to the Factory Reset Data or similar to proceed. Again, use the arrow key to navigate down.

  9. Your phone should begin the process of wiping everything out.

If you own an older Samsung phone such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge

  1. Hold down the Volume Down -, the Power Button and the Home Button keys at the same time.

  2. Keep holding the buttons until the screen turns blue.

  3. Press on the Volume Down Key and immediately hold down the Volume Up Key, Power Button and Home Button until the screen shows an Android logo with a spinning wheel on it.

  4. Press on the Volume Down and the Power Button key at the same time for a few times until the Recovery Menu shows up.

  5. Repeat the same steps as above between 4 to 9.

If you own a Huawei phone

  1. Hold down the Power Button until a small menu shows up.

  2. Tap on Power Off to power off your phone. No pin needed to power off the phone.
  3. Once the screen is black, hold down the Volume Up and Power Button key at the same time until the Recovery menu shows up.

  4. Repeat the same steps as above between 4 to 9.

If you own any other Android phone

If you own any other Android phone other than the above, you can try the following patterns to enter the recovery menu and turn off your phone:

  • Samsung: Power + Home + Volume Up Button
  • HTC:
    • Settings > uncheck Fastboot
    • Power + Volume Down Button
  • LG
    • Power + Volume Down Button
    • Release and Hold Again Home Button when you See LG logo.
  • Motorola: Power + Volume Down Button
  • OnePlus: Power + Volume Down Button
  • Huawei: Power + Volume Down Button
  • Google Pixel: Power + Volume Down Button
  • Sony: Power + Volume up
  • Rest: Power + Volume Up or Down (+ Home)

This process should take some time to finish. Once it's done, the startup screen will appear and you will need to setup your phone from the beginning as you did when you bought it for the first time. You may need to enter your Google credentials in order to proceed with the setup.

Conclusion

Once you have followed the steps above correctly, you should successfully reset your Android password and should regain access on your phone.
